Established in 1994, the Department of Physics has grown into a distinguished centre for excellence in teaching, research, and innovation. The department is supported by a team of dedicated, highly qualified, and experienced faculty members committed to academic excellence and the holistic development of students. The department is recognized as a Research Centre by Anna University, Chennai, with seven recognized research supervisors currently guiding seven Ph.D. scholars in diverse areas of physics. Our research focuses on emerging fields including materials science, nanoscience, nanotechnology, renewable energy, and advanced functional materials, addressing contemporary scientific and technological challenges. The department has successfully secured research funding exceeding ₹42 lakhs from the Department of Science and Technology (DST) under the Technology Development Transfer (TDT) scheme. In addition, financial support has been received from DST, DRDO, and the Tamil Nadu State Council for Science and Technology (TNSCST) for organizing national conferences, workshops, faculty development programmes, and student-centric initiatives. Through the DST-FIST programme, the department has significantly strengthened its research infrastructure with state-of-the-art facilities, including a DC Magnetron Sputtering Unit, Solar Simulator, and Photoluminescence Spectrometer. The department also houses a well-equipped materials synthesis laboratory for the preparation of nanomaterials and thin films, along with an advanced characterization laboratory featuring X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), UV–Visible Spectroscopy, ATR-FTIR, and an Electrochemical Workstation. With its strong emphasis on quality education, cutting-edge research, industry collaboration, and innovation, the Department of Physics continues to nurture competent graduates, researchers, and professionals who contribute meaningfully to science, technology, and society.
