Unfolding the dynamics of transfer learning and AI Innovations in Robotics

As the adage states, ‘The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination,’ An expedition to delve into the ingenious realm of transfer learning, uncovering its profound influence on the domains of robotics and AI. The event titled “Expert Talk on Transfer Learning and AI Innovations with Robotics” was organized on 9th August 2023 by the Department of Robotics and Automation in association with Robo Club - SREC and The Robotics Society Student Chapter - SREC. The gathering served as a platform to bridge the gap between theory and practicality, where innovation and imagination reign supreme. In the ever-evolving landscape of technology, the amalgamation of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics has ushered in an era of unprecedented possibilities.

The prominent chief guests were Ms. Sini Raj Pulari, Faculty of EDICT, Bahrain Polytechnic, Bahrain, Dr. Shriram K Vasudevan, Intel Innovator, ACM distinguished speaker, AWS and NASSCOM prime ambassador. The proceedings commenced with a warm welcome by Dr. R. Sudhakar, Associate Professor, Department of Robotics and Automation. Dr. A. Murugarajan, Professor and Head of the Department of Robotics and Automation, delivered the presidential address. He extended a gracious welcome to the distinguished chief guests, delivering a concise preview of the forthcoming sessions and earnestly inspiring the students to engage enthusiastically in the upcoming discourse. Mrs. N. Dheerthi, Assistant Professor, Department of Robotics and Automation, formally presented the chief guests to the students.

The chief guest Ms. Sini Raj Pulari addressed the gathering with her inspiring session on the topic “Transfer Learning.” She provided a comprehensive overview of various facets within the realm of machine learning and underscored its significance. Additionally, she highlighted the pivotal role of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) in the context of transfer learning. Transfer learning is a machine learning technique where a model trained on one task or dataset is utilized to improve the performance on a different but related task or dataset. The subsequent session was initiated by the esteemed chief guest, Dr. Shriram K Vasudevan, who expounded extensively on the rich array of skills he has cultivated over his years of experience. His presentation centered around the compelling theme of “AI Innovations,” where he offered profound insights into the advancements in AI technology, notably the integration of voice recognition systems in automobiles to provide alerts to drivers in case of errors. With a remarkable record of approximately 120 hackathons, Dr. Vasudevan stood out as the triumphant victor in 61 of them, a remarkable achievement that significantly embellished his professional portfolio. He candidly shared the lessons gleaned from his initial 17 failures, enriching his discourse with invaluable wisdom.

The event continued with an engaging and enlightening interactive session with the students, where he addressed a multitude of questions in a remarkably detailed and comprehensive manner. The event concluded with the endnote given by Dr. A. Kishorekumar, Assistant Professor, Department of Robotics and Automation. In conclusion, both sessions seamlessly unfolded as riveting explorations of innovative technologies poised at the intersection of robotics and future advancements, offering attendees a captivating glimpse into the upcoming frontiers of knowledge.
